Elements of Agriculture SIR: I appreciated the comments of Mark O’Connor (September 2009) on my article “Green Myths about Australian Farming” in the April issue. I would not want to weaken the impact of his excellent work Overloading Australia. He mentions a dearth of data in my paper—I was rather dealing with ideas and how they are uncritically accepted, often with “guessed” figures. He raises the question of the cost of plant nutrients, and I was surprised that he did not stress the use of “natural” nitrogen.
