We’re advised to open the windows only a crack else the raccoons who live in the roof might enter our rooms. All night, I stretch out in the big crisp bed, hoping to be surprised by yellow eyes looking into mine, to wake suddenly, sensing another heart beating in time to the stars—but raccoons, like you, leave me well alone, even though my window’s wide open and, really, the distance from attic to room isn’t far.
