Jason Morgan: ‘Unknown worlds’

Unknown worlds

The blood moon shines on the old world.
Your footprints on the sand fill with water.
Then the slow tides drag them back to where
shadows live, and the stars sprinkle
like pearls on the dark, buoyant waves.
On the slope, where the trail is lost,
satellite dishes have emerged
like great ears listening to the
silence separating the words
of unknown life forms. The waves from
the dishes vanish into space.
You close your eyes and let the night
wash through you with its myriad
stars. Then you raise your ear to the
darkness, and the stark absence of
hope does not stop you from hoping.
