One more ‘irritation’

scg cricket busCultural enrichment, that’s what several generations of social engineers have insisted Australia needed most of all. We were a sorry, monochrome lot, they said, bland and boring, fixated on sun, surf and sport, forever out of touch with the real world beyond our shores. So they brought the rest of the world here, including some entirely predictable “irritations”.

Now glance at the photo atop this post. It’s the crowd pouring into the Sydney Cricket Ground for yesterday’s Test, that annual exercise in the way things always have been. Can you see anything enriching in the picture?

It’s that bus, one of many parked athwart walkways leading to the ground.

Its purpose? To foil suicide bombers and the Prophet’s truckies.
